What is Baptism About?
Baptism is a joyful celebration for followers of Jesus. It’s a public declaration of saving faith and a warm welcome into God’s family. While baptism itself doesn’t save, nor add anything to our salvation, it beautifully reflects the truth that we’ve been united with Christ in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:1-6). As St. Augustine wrote, baptism and the Lord’s supper are “visible signs of invisible grace.”
Jesus invites his followers to be baptized as their first step upon coming to saving faith (Acts 2:38). Just as Jesus’ baptism revealed Him as God’s beloved Son (Mark 1:9-11), our baptism is a beautiful sign of our adoption into God’s family—sons and daughters, loved by our Heavenly Father!
